In 1921, Erwin Stein transcribed Mahler’s 4th Symphony for string quartet, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, piano, harmonium and percussion. This exercice is totally successful. It is commonplace for sure to state that transciption can a transparent and clarifying effect to the formal and structure articulation. The tempo, as a result of a reduced instrumental density, is inflected, finding a completely new vitality, and in this case a lightness, an intrinsic breathing, a wholly Viennese grâce, indicting even more and excating contrasts and temporal flux.
