Rémi Magnan studied under Philippe Guingouain at the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Grenoble, before joining the Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique et Danse de Lyon under Bernard Cazauran, Cédric Carlier and François Montmayeur. He received a master’s degree from the latter in 2013.
Rémi is an active member in the contemporary music scene, having joined the Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain in 2018 as a double bass soloist. He holds the same position in the Lemanic Modern Ensemble, and has collaborated with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, L’Itinéraire, Tempus Konnex and C Barré.
He has had the opportunity to play alongside many well-known figures from the world of contemporary music (Peter Eötvös, Bruno Mantovani, Pascal Rophé, Philippe Manoury, Michael Jarrell, Kaija Saariaho and even Tristan Murail) and play at prestigious festivals (Lucerne Festival, Venice Biennale, Festival Milano Musica, Archipel in Geneva and Festival Musica in Strasbourg…).
Furthermore, the self-confessed symphonic repertoire fan is often asked to perform with some of the most prestigious French orchestras. For example, he was co-soloist for the Orchestre National de Lyon during the 2014-2015 season, and is regularly asked to perform solo or co-solo with the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, Opéra National de Lyon, Opéra de Toulon, Orchestre de Cannes and the Orchestre des Pays de Savoie. He has also collaborated with the Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse under the baton of leading figures such as Myung-Whun Chung, Tugan Sokhiev, Marek Janowski and Jaap Van Zweden. Rémi was also an academy member of the Pacific Music Festival in Japan in 2013.
He is a well regarded chamber music player who has played alongside Sonia Wieder-Atherton, Juliette Hurel, Isabelle Moretti, Quatuor Debussy, Quatuor Bela, Quatuor Varèse and even Ensemble Syntonia.
His musical career thus far has taken him all across Europe, as well as performances in USA, China and Japan.
